Posts from the Past: Personal Stories of the November Pogrom
Nov. 11, 2025 - 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm
Eighty-seven years after the November Pogrom, Magdalene M. Wrobel, Ph.D., an Associate Director at the Leo Baeck Institute – New York | Berlin – asks how can we understand the horror and shock experienced by its victims and the broader Jewish communities in Germany and Austria? One powerful way is through the voices preserved in eyewitness letters, diaries, and photographs.
This presentation explores the key aspects of the November Pogrom with the help of 1938Projekt — a year-long digital calendar created by the Leo Baeck Institute – New York | Berlin. By adopting a microhistorical approach, this project examines the events of 1938 day by day, revealing the range of reactions and emotions of individuals and families as they struggled to endure growing persecution and violence.
