Art Educators’ Workshop
On January 12, 2017, Chhange held its Educator Workshop for the upcoming student art installation Through Their Eyes. The workshop featured educator/dramatic artist Susan Stein, who led the teachers in a dynamic exploration of writings of adolescents who lived during the Holocaust. Teachers will bring these writings back to their students, using them to convey the power of young voices to address injustice in today’s world.
Claire Boren, professional artist and Holocaust survivor, displayed some of her artwork, and shared how her experiences as a child during the Holocaust inform her work. Jane Denny, Chhange Director of Education updated the teachers on the current refugee situation, explaining how students can use social media to gain insight into the lives of today’s adolescent refugees. Art Educator Arlene Smelson presented examples of various artistic approaches for the students to use to reflect their responses to the current refugee crisis.
