When Holocaust survivor Claire Boren was a child, she and her mother spent months hiding in a hole dug under a pig sty — “about the size of a coffin,” she remembers — barely large enough to hold the two of them. 

Three honorees will be rewarded for advancing social justice with hard work and loyal, long-term service on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the 21st testimonial dinner of the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education.

For today’s educators and advocates, it can be difficult to convey the true impact of the Holocaust to younger generations. The pure statistics – six million European Jews murdered, including 1.5 million children, between 1933 and 1945 – are so daunting that they can be almost impossible to grasp.

The Warsaw Ghetto, scene of horrendous atrocities but also a place where Jewish heroism took full expression in a valiant uprising, will be the focus of this year’s Yom Hashoa observance at the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education.
