Chhange's Executive Director Marks Armenian Genocide at RI Memorial
April 29, 2026
Chhange Executive Director Dr. Asya Darbinyan traveled to Providence, RI, Sunday, April 26, 2026, to deliver a powerful keynote address at the Armenian Martyrs' Memorial to mark the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
In her speech, Darbinyan stressed the need for education. "A number of states have mandated Armenian Genocide education, an important and hard-won achievement. Yet how many schools in those states actually teach it? A handful? Why? Teachers must first be equipped with the knowledge and training to teach this history effectively. It is up to us—as a community of professionals, educators, scholars, leaders, activists, and advocates—to ensure that they are," she said.
"We, the third and fourth generations and descendants of genocide survivors, along with our allies, carry the responsibility to share our family histories, engage with schools, and work alongside educators," Darbinyan continued. "We must help equip them to teach about the Armenian Genocide within the broader context of other genocides.Because the Armenian Genocide is not only an Armenian issue. It is a human one."
"I was humbled and encouraged by the kind reactions from Rhode Island's elected officials, including Gov. Dan McKee, Sen. Jack Reed, and state Sen. David P. Tikoian, on my remarks about the importance of working together to advance genocide and human rights education. Grateful for the shared commitment to this vital work," Darbinyan said.
